Staying Healthy and Fit with UC!

Alot of people don't know this and I don't share it with too many people, but I have been living with UC(Ulcerative Colitis) since 1981. Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. People with this condition have problems with the immune system, but it is not clear whether immune problems cause this illness. Although stress and certain foods can trigger symptoms, they do not cause ulcerative colitis.
This has been the condition that has bothered me for 30 years. There are thousands of people out there who have UC and don't understand how to deal with it. It took me a few years to really understand how to live with it on a day to day basis. This is not a disease that I would wish upon anyone. This is something that should not be taken lightly. I know for myself, there has been many occasions where I have neglected to take care of myself and more frequent flare ups would occur. Like I stated before, stress can trigger symptoms but I do believe stress can be one of the main causes of UC.
Over the years, I have learned how to deal with it alot better but there are times that it seems to get the best of me. Outside of the medication that I take, the BEST remedy I have is Exercise! Staying healthy and fit has been a lifesaver when it comes to UC. It has been the best way that I know how to deal with stress. I have become more conscientious of the foods I eat also because of the UC. It has made me lactose intolerant so I have learned other ways to have calcium in my nutrition. I know that I will always have UC for the rest of my life. It is up to me how I want to live with it. I cannot let it dictate to me how my life is going to be lived. I have taken a proactive stance to this disease by staying fit and exercising, eating healthy, and doing my best to limit the stress in my life. All 3 of these combined efforts have been my keys to living with UC and still staying healthy a long the way. For those of you who have Ulcerative Colitis and don't exercise, I implore you to do so. It will make your life alot healthier and much easier to deal with this disease and even extend your life a few more years.
